What's Your Signature Scent?

Updated: Mar 28, 2022

I know I know, this is a hard question to answer because there are so many wonderful scents in the world. Some days you want to smell sweet like candy, earthy like patchouli or like a walking spa with something lavender or eucalyptus. There are scents you get sick of and some that you can't have enough... so how in the world can you find a signature scent.

Here is a list of tips and tricks to finding your own signature scent!

1) Try out a bunch of new scents

Okay yes, perfume can be pretty expensive sometimes and that becomes the main reason why people don't buy them so often. However, you can get samples, start adding to your essential oil collection or try monthly subscription services that help you try new scents.

2) Figure out what vibe you want to give off?

Imagine that you're walking into a room, filled with different people who first notice you by your scent before they even get a full look at you. What vibe do you want your scent aura to give off? There is fresh laundry clean, just left the Jazz club, Charlie in the Chocolate factory, Goddess of Egypt, Candyland, Hippie at a concert, beach babe or like you just left the Temple. See I didn't even have to say a scent without you being able to visualize and smell it. So what vibe will you give off?

3) Find your own style and forget the trends

Who wants to smell like everyone else? No thank you (the Aquarius in me basks in her originality). Who remembers when everyone was smelling like Juicy Couture or Pink sugar. What a throwback to the 2000's right? Or when Axe spray was such a huge thing. I can't lie I did jump on some perfume trends in my past and I didn't even like the way they smelt but everyone else was raving about them. You don't have to smell like everyone else and to my females and femme people, you don't have to smell like strawberries and cream to give off a feminine aura. It's all in your essence and how you feel in the scent you're wearing.

4) It's all in the Notes people !

Before you even purchase any perfume or perfume oil, check out the notes in that perfume. Sometimes you prefer the top notes of citrus in a perfume but can't stand the base notes of vanilla and clove when it dries. Do yourself a favour and check out the notes pyramids in these perfumes, to determine if you'll even like what you're buying. Also give the scent some time to sit on your skin for a couple of hours, before you determine that you like it and want to buy it.

5) Just like painting, you got to Start Light

There are some scents that you won't understand why people are wearing. However, they've built their scent receptors up to handle the deep notes of woodiness and leather. With that being said, I have a quick fun fact for you. Did you know 50 percent of the population can’t even smell musk? Some scents will be very unfamiliar to you, which is why you won't like most of the popular scents. You gotta build your nose up from lighter, cleaner, citrus scents into the florals and deep woods.

6) What brings you a sense of nostalgia?

Your fragrance preference has to do deeply with familiarity. Scents that remind you of a certain, place, time or person in your life, is usually one that you'll like the most. So let's take a trip down memory lane, shall we? Give yourself a moment to tune into your senses, reflect on who you were in childhood, what scents you loved the most and the ones you hated. Think about Sunday's in Grandma's kitchen or about the best spa you've visited. What about that camping trip and the smell of wood that lingered in your hair for hours? Maybe you went to a life-changing trip in Saudi Arabia, what scents did you love most there? Or maybe you're a beach babe, so the smell of sunscreen and the salty sea gives you a sense of nostalgia.

Enjoy the journey of finding your signature scent! It is a long one for some but it doesn't need to be a painful one!

love,

Nirvana Notes
